No 'range' is specified for the attack action, only for the movement of the obstacle. The rules state that if no Range is specified for the attack, attacks are to be considered Melee.

I played a cragheart to level 9 and it pretty much went how you've imagined. Started out ranged, then became heavily obstacle focused, and ended up being a melee character. Make sure to start with the Boots of Striding. Only the Brute needs these more than the Cragheart. Movement is still tight at level 1, but since you have lots of ranged attacks it should be OK. Try not to use Massive Boulder for the move unless you really have to—the top is just too good.
